Dealing with Professors:

Working in higher education, I quickly learned how many students were simply scared of their professors. They awed and revered them in many cases and felt they were unapproachable. But this is not the case! Professors should be respected, but they should not be revered as an unapproachable Greek god!

Professors are interested in your learning!

Here some quick tips to help in dealing with professors:

  • Don’t be intimidated. They are generally available for help and desire your best. They want to teach and to do research.
  • Schedule appointments.
  • Do not call professors at home unless invited to do so.
  • Be respectful of their time.
  • Go to office hours.
  • Always discuss difficulties with instructors.
  • Check and recheck possible grading errors before approaching a professor.
  • Speak with your professors about your career ambitions and future plans. You never know when they may have a contact that will be very beneficial for you!
  • Search out opportunities to help your professors in their research and teaching responsibilities. Some colleges and universities offer credits or salaries for research and teaching assistants.
